Game Play
There will be 3 piles of cards, each pile representing a color. Fish and Action cards will be shuffled together into one pile. You will start the game by picking an Angler card from the Angler card pile. The youngest player picks first and the play continues clockwise.
The Angler card you pick will have different confidence baits that the angler likes to use so be sure to turn your angler card face down so other players do not try to use your angler's confidence baits. If you catch a fish on a bait that your angler has listed on its card, it will give you an additional 1/2 pound of weight at weigh in time.
After every player picks an angler card, each player will then start picking fish cards. When picking a fish, you have the choice of picking from the pile or the discard pile. If the fish card you pick says to visit the tackle store to pick up a bait, don't forget to grab a bait at the same time. If you have to discard a fish, place it face up in a discard pile. If you have to discard a bait card, place those face up next to the bait pile. Don't forget, there are a maximum number of cards you can hold, so any excess cards in your hand needs to be discarded.
If you happen to run out of fish or bait cards, then shuffle the discard pile and face them down so players can draw from that pile.
How do you catch a fish?
To catch a fish, you must match two fish cards by fish species and weight along with a bait card. If you have matching fish cards, but do not have a bait card, you must wait to draw a bait card to consider it a catch.
When you have a catch, place the two matching fish cards and bait card face down in front of you (You don't want to let the other players know the weight of the fish or the bait used until the weigh-in). This is your live well.
The play continues until someone has a maximum number of caught fish. When a player reaches the catch limit, that player has an option to continue fishing and potentially replace (cull) any of their catches with bigger catches OR declare “Heading to the weigh-in!” during their turn.
If a player declares that they are going to the weigh-in then that person is done fishing and all other players have one more turn to try and improve their catches. Once everyone’s turn is complete, everyone will count the weight of their caught fish. Don’t forget, if you caught any bass on the baits that your Angler has listed as a confidence bait, then you get an additional 1⁄2 pound of weight added to your total weight.
The person with the highest weight total is declared the Champion and wins bragging rights until the next tournament.
Culling a catch?
If you are culling (replacing one catch for another) a catch as part of your turn, when you remove the catch from your live well, discard both the fish and the bait into their respective discard piles.
What if there is a tie?
The player with the largest catch wins. If there is a tie for the largest catch, then it goes to second largest catch then third largest catch, etc. If they have the exact same catches, then there is a fish off between those two players.
